Fresh plant masks are a great way to revive the skin! Using plants from your garden for a facial at home can be such a treat for your skin. The freshness of the plant feels completely different from using older, dried herbs. Refer to the list below for a few plants that are safe to use, and please make sure that you have positive identification before using!

DIY Natural Face Mask

To make a fresh plant facial mask, choose plants according to your skin’s needs and the qualities listed below. Unless you have very sensitive skin or a specific allergy, the plants listed are generally safe to use on the skin as ranked by EWG.org ‘s Cosmetics Database.

  • Collect 3-4 tbsp of plant matter and combine in a mortar and pestle or a small food processor
  • Use the mortar and pestle to mash the herbs, releasing the juices from inside the plant and creating a pulp. If using a food processor, grind for a minute or so until the plant pieces are broken up.
  • You can apply the mask simply with the herbs from your garden, or you may choose to add other ingredients such as clay, yogurt, or honey to form a thicker paste.
  • Spread onto the skin and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Rinse clean with warm water and follow with a toner and moisturizer.
